Career Choices And Placement options

A Chorus Line
Career choices and placement options

I have started looking at possible drama schools and uni's to apply for 2015. I have looked at 6 choices: 3 possible drama schools and 3 possible uni choices.
The things that are important and what I am looking for in the choosing of places are that they cater the right path of education best suited for myself. I would like to do a degree course in musical theatre, and i need to be looking for a course that caters the right balance of training between the 3 disciplines of singing, dancing and acting. Also I will be looking at accredited and well known places that would be able to help me get into the industry and pursue a career in performance.

Drama school choices:

Guildford School of Acting (GSA) GSA course link

GSA offer dedicated conservatoire training with particular time and attention devoted to the progress and development of an  individual artist.  Performers who have gone to Guildford has been able achieve success in theatre, film and television.
The musical theatre training that Guildford offers I feel is perfect for me as it offers training in all 3 disciplines and Guildford has a well recognized high standard of training and Alumni.  Throughout the training, they guide you towards the development of a clear set of individual technical skills, as well as important critical and evaluative skills. You will have specific practical skills-based classes in group and individual singing, ballet, jazz, tap and other forms of dance, voice, acting, stage combat and contextual studies. Your skills will be further developed through integration exercises, scene work and project rehearsals. Classes in dance and singing are highly prioritized alongside acting classes and projects, which enable GSA Musical Theatre performers to be multi-skilled and therefore highly versatile, ensuring their appeal to the industry at large. I feel I would be able to do well at a place like this as I have already got a good background of musical theatre so to be able to push myself even further and train to a professional level and at this college would really be great for me.

Arts Educational: Arts Ed course overview

At Arts Ed they offer a musical theatre course that is triple theatre course, where they cover 1/3 of the course to each discipline of singing dancing and acting. Which personally I think that would be good for me as there is equal training in everything.

The course's structure in the first and second year you will train in acting, singing and dance – ArtsEd's highly successful 'triple threat' training.

Dance: The weekly classes will cover the many different disciplines required in the industry – jazz, classical ballet, pas de deux, tap, street jazz and contemporary.

Singing: There will be weekly one-to-one singing and repertoire tuition, and take part in ensemble, performance and song workshop classes.

Acting: You will learn a wide range of acting styles and techniques, develop your confidence and understand how to gain a well-supported and expressive voice.

The third and final year of the course is the production year. You will perform on a regular basis and participate in full-scale public performances for a paying audience. This will equip you with the stamina and experience to go straight into professional productions. Throughout this year the work and profile will be actively promoted by the school. Your grand finale is a West End showcase for an invited audience of industry figures including casting directors, agents, producers, directors and choreographers.

I really liked the look of Arts Ed as it is a well established drama school and I really liked the look of the course break down which can be found on the website. I'm looking for myself to be able to grow as a performer and have professional training in all fields of theatre and like GSA I feel Arts Ed could really be a great place for me to go and suit me as a performer.

Royal Central School Of Speech and Drama
Central Course overview

I have also looked at possibly applying for Central as I am very interested in their musical theatre course. Their overview says that they have Intensive training in acting, singing and dancing with the emphasis firmly on acting. Students graduate with the professional skills to work in plays, musicals, film, television and radio. The course has outstanding links with the performing arts industry and this is reflected in the wide range and high level of graduate employment.
I personally like the look of this course as I feel it would be good to be have a focus in drama training as I do feel currently out of singing, dancing and acting that acting is what I am less confident in, so this course involves the singing and dancing however they have a strong training emphasis in acting which I feel would be good for me.

University choices:

I have looked at possible uni choices and I personally would prefer to go to a drama school however I will still apply to universities to keep my options open and give myself a wider range of opportunities. I am still looking to do a BA Hons degree in musical theatre so I need to have a look for courses that I am able to go into the industry with and be employable after the training. I am looking for places that aren't too far away, London way and around central London is where I would be happy to go to for uni, however if an opportunity comes up further afield that would suit me really well happens to come up I would consider going further away for my education.

The uni choices that I have found that I would be happy to apply for are currently
Chichester university
 University of Wolverhampton
University of West London
I have looked at these choices for unis as they do a BA Hons degree which I would like to do. What I am looking for is to have a wide range of opportunities in the course to further my skills and to give me the best opportunities post education. I personally would rather go to a drama school as they have more direct links to London and agents and directors, however I will still consider applying for universities as it will give me a few more options for next year.
